Because of their shared experiences with white domination and segregation in industrializing nations, African Americans and Africans in South Africa have forged close ties with each other since the late nineteenth century in a diverse range of areas: politics, economics and business, religion, education, sports, literature, music, theater, and art. This documentary editing project — which commenced in September, 1999 for a three-year period — will chronicle these rich exchanges from 1890 to 1965 through the creation of a collection of primary documents to be edited into a two-volume publication.
